We all know dealing with dry mascara can be a pain. It drags down your lashes, doesn’t set correctly, flakes, and sometimes clumps. Plus, with how much we spend on mascara, it’s something I take seriously. Mascara is one of my favorite makeup items, along with liquid eyeliner, and I’ve discovered some tricks to revive dry mascara.
I’ve been trying out different mascaras recently to find the perfect one and noticed how common dry mascara issues are. I was curious why more people weren’t discussing it. Many have experienced their mascara drying out after just a few months, affecting both drugstore and high-end brands. So, I decided to understand the science behind making long-lasting mascara and how to improve its shelf life.
After some research and consulting a local makeup artist, I learned more about dry mascara causes and prevention. Surprisingly, many weren’t aware of the issue. If you’re in the same boat, keep reading.
The main culprit of dry mascara is the lack of preservatives in the product. On average, women replace their mascara every three months, meaning the product needing preservation gets replaced too soon, which adds up quickly in costs. High-end mascara shoppers know this can exceed $100 a year.
So why do people keep buying it despite these issues? Often, drugstore sales lure us in with low prices, and we convince ourselves there’s no difference between cheap and expensive products. This price point is why some brands skip adding preservatives.
Mascaras degrade due to bacteria, mold, yeast, and other microorganisms that thrive in tubes without preservatives. But don’t worry, here are some hacks to try on your dry mascara:
1. Contact Lens Solution: A great way to revive dry mascara. Safe and easy to use, it’s my top pick because it’s affordable and available at any pharmacy.
2. Hair Spray: A handy everyday item for a quick fix. Just spritz your mascara wand, although you’ll need to do this before each use.
3. Witch Hazel: Similar to contact lens solution, but some find it drying. Use it if other hacks don’t work.
4. Eye Drops: Cheap and found at any drugstore. Use a bit each time, but be aware you might lose some in the process.
5. Eyeshadow Primer: Some people like this option, although I’m unsure if it’s effective against bacteria or mold.
6. Blow Dryer: An intense hack that might work by melting the hardened ingredients.
7. Olive Oil: Just dip your mascara wand in a bit of olive oil for a simple solution.
8. Hot Water: Let your mascara sit in hot water until it loosens.
9. Aloe Vera Gel: Add a few drops to revive your mascara.
10. Other Tips: Enhance your lashes without mascara using an eyelash curler. Keep your eyelids clean for fuller-looking lashes.
Investing in good mascara and using contact lens solution can extend its life. Some brands even offer expiration dates. If these hacks don’t help, it might be time to buy a new mascara.
