11 Compelling Benefits of Oil Pulling for Radiant Skin

Oil pulling is an ancient remedy that’s making waves in the Western world thanks to its claimed health benefits, especially for oral care and skin improvements. The process is believed to detoxify the body by removing toxins that gather overnight, preventing them from getting into your bloodstream and causing skin problems. Benefits for the skin include reducing acne, evening out skin tone, brightening the complexion, and minimizing wrinkles.

Traditionally, oil pulling is associated with oral health and is typically done on an empty stomach using sesame oil. This Ayurvedic practice is said to positively affect the whole body, boosting energy and improving oral health. While it contributes to whiter teeth and better health overall, the method also offers a natural way to enhance skin.

The beneficial effects on the skin come from eliminating harmful bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that can lead to health issues. Oil pulling helps reduce inflammation, contributing to better health and skin. Ayurvedic practitioners claim it can alleviate skin conditions by removing the same toxins that cause these problems, allowing the body to better absorb nutrients. Fatty acids in these oils moisturize the skin, and vitamin E can help reduce wrinkle appearance.

Removing toxins through oil pulling may help clear skin problems like acne, while also preventing future breakouts. It can even out skin tone by eliminating the toxins responsible for pigmentation issues, leading to healthier skin with a smoother complexion.

Sunflower oil tapping into vitamin E is ideal for those dealing with uneven skin tone as it can brighten the skin. Antioxidants in oils also help fight wrinkles, protecting against damage from free radicals. Oil pulling with olive oil targets skin that has lost firmness or collagen.

Oil pulling brightens the skin by boosting circulation, which enhances complexion brightness. It cleanses by ridding skin of dirt and bacteria that dull it. Coconut oil’s lauric acid is particularly good for brightening and exfoliating dull skin.

This practice can also reduce skin irritation by cutting down bacteria and inflammation. However, those with sensitive skin should avoid potentially irritating oils. Oils high in fatty acids moisturize the skin, which is especially crucial during winter when dryness is common. Coconut oil, rich in fatty acids, is excellent for hydration.

Oil pulling may also help with dark under-eye circles by enhancing circulation and toxin removal, contributing to a brighter look overall. It’s also believed to support aging skin by removing toxins and improving blood flow, with antioxidants providing protection from free radicals.

For skin health, oil pulling can be a natural alternative to synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs, benefiting those with chronic inflammation. Antimicrobial properties also help prevent skin infections by killing bacteria. Coconut oil is particularly effective in this area.

To oil pull, put 1-2 tablespoons of oil, like coconut, sesame, olive, or sunflower oil, in your mouth. Swish it around for 20 minutes, ensuring it covers your teeth and gums, then spit it out and rinse with warm water. Incorporate it into your daily routine for the best outcome, ideally in the morning before eating. Use high-quality, organic, cold-pressed oils, stored in a cool, dark place away from heat and light, and try to use fresh oil each time to prevent bacterial build-up.

If you’re beginning, start with a 5-minute session and gradually increase to 20 minutes. Avoid overdoing it to prevent irritation. Always choose organic and unrefined oils.

While oil pulling is generally safe, some might experience side effects like jaw soreness or pain, dry mouth, nausea, rash, or diarrhea, usually due to incorrect technique or allergies. If you feel any discomfort, it’s best to stop up oil and speak to your doctor.
