Even if you’re well-versed in Ayurveda, adjusting your diet according to your dosha can be a bit challenging. So, finding something tridoshic—that works for pitta, kapha, or vata—feels like discovering gold.
Ayurvedic dietary advice for vata, pitta, and kapha types is pretty straightforward and involves making minor tweaks to what you eat and how you eat it. According to Ayurvedic medicine, everyone has a specific dosha that guides the best types of food, activities, and lifestyle for their unique makeup.
Doshas relate to the elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth, and are categorized as vata, pitta, and kapha. When these doshas are balanced, you experience health mentally, spiritually, and physically. Imbalances in your doshas can lead to illness.
Ayurveda promotes consuming wholesome foods to maintain balance in your body, mind, and spirit, helping to keep illness at bay. The nutritional guidelines based on doshas are tailored to support the dominant dosha in an individual.
This recipe can be enjoyed warm or on a hot day and is suitable for all doshas (tridoshic). It can also be consumed at room temperature. Be aware that serving it cold (with just two ice cubes per glass) might not be ideal for vata types. Whichever way you prefer it, bringing balance to your body is just a glass away.
Serves 4
Ingredients:
– 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, crushed
– 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
– 3 cups of water
– 1/4 cup raw honey
– 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (about 4 lemons)
– 1 cup ice
Instructions:
1. To make the spicy syrup, boil the ginger and turmeric with one cup of water in a small saucepan, covered, for ten minutes. Boil longer if you want a stronger flavor. Remove from heat, strain, and let cool for three to five minutes. Stir in the honey until it dissolves. Refrigerate until cold.
2. Mix the ginger-turmeric syrup with fresh lemon juice and the remaining two cups of water. Pour into four glasses, adding a few ice cubes to each.
Tip: Plan ahead to allow time for the spicy syrup to cool, and go easy on the ice.
