Ayurvedic Herb Offers Remarkable Skin Benefits

On my journey to achieving clear skin, I’m focusing on the role my gut plays in overall skin health. I’m also discovering which foods might cause inflammation and contribute to breakouts. In Ayurvedic medicine, nagarmotha oil is known for improving gut health because of its properties that aid digestion. Nagarmotha is beneficial for the skin too—it can help reduce signs of aging, hydrate, and prevent breakouts, while also clarifying the skin.

Commonly referred to as “nut grass,” nagarmotha (cyperus rotundus) is an Ayurvedic herb traditionally used to address issues like abdominal pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and fungal infections. Its benefits stem from essential oils, flavonoids, terpenoids, and coumarins.

Nagarmotha’s essential oils can enhance gut movement, which is crucial for those with digestive issues or constipation. Its flavonoids have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the skin and reduce redness, while coumarins have antiseptic properties that help prevent breakouts by keeping the skin clean.

According to Ayurvedic practitioners, the digestive system is fundamental to health since it absorbs nutrients and removes toxins. When the gut is not functioning well, it can lead to health issues, including skin conditions. Problems like low digestive fire can result in toxins that cause inflammation, the root of many skin issues like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

Depending on your body type, nagarmotha can be especially helpful for skincare. For those with a pitta dosha, digestive and stomach disorders can manifest as skin and heart problems, along with inflammation. Nagarmotha’s benefits can help reduce inflammation caused by digestive problems.

If you have conditions like acne, eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis, an imbalance in your gut flora may be to blame. Nagarmotha can help alleviate inflammation related to these stubborn skin conditions. It can be used as a carrier oil for other essential oils, providing soothing and moisturizing effects. When applied to the skin, nagarmotha oil helps in hydration and preventing dryness.

The flavonoids in nagarmotha boast antioxidant properties that protect the skin from free radical damage, which can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps in lightening dark spots and achieving an even skin tone due to its antiseptic properties. Nagarmotha can prevent breakouts thanks to its ability to keep the skin clean and free of toxins, making it an effective treatment for acne.

Nagarmotha’s antibacterial properties are useful in treating skin infections, as its essential oils can kill bacteria and fungi. This makes it effective against conditions like athlete’s foot, ringworm, and candida. It’s also beneficial for scalp issues like dandruff and dryness, promoting hair growth and preventing hair fall.

When it comes to soothing sunburns, nagarmotha’s anti-inflammatory benefits reduce swelling and redness, making sunburns more manageable and preventing blistering. Its antibacterial qualities cleanse the skin, removing dirt and impurities for improved complexion and texture.

Oxidative stress can lead to cell damage and wrinkles. The antioxidants in nagarmotha combat this, helping to keep the skin youthful and healthy. It brightens the skin by reducing dark spots and uneven tone.

Nagarmotha can be found in various skincare products, or you can make its oil at home. Simply dry the roots, grind them into powder, and mix with a base oil. This oil is versatile and can be used with other oils effectively.

For skin application, make a paste from nagarmotha powder and water, let it sit on the skin for 20 minutes, and wash it off with lukewarm water. It can also serve as an herbal shampoo. You can even make a face pack with rosewater or milk, and use it once a day.

Additionally, nagarmotha tea can be brewed by steeping a teaspoon of the powder in boiling water. Drinking this tea a few times a day can provide benefits as well.

Nagarmotha is generally safe, but some may experience side effects like stomach upset. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid it due to insufficient research on its safety for them. Always do a patch test before using products with nagarmotha to check for any adverse reactions.

This Ayurvedic herb, used for centuries, offers multiple benefits for skin, hair, and overall health. It helps in treating skin conditions, reducing scars, and addressing skin allergies. If you’re interested in using nagarmotha, it’s available at Ayurvedic stores or can be prepared at home.
