Keloids are raised scars that form where the skin has healed after a piercing. It’s useful to know how to prevent and treat keloids, especially before getting a piercing, as they can be worrisome. People with darker skin tones and those with a family history of keloids are more susceptible. Keloids are often a concern due to their appearance, especially on the face, neck, or hands, and are more common on earlobes because they are a popular piercing site. A study found that earrings with metal backs can lead to keloids on the back of the earlobe. Getting piercings at a younger age, such as before 11, or avoiding them if you have a family history of keloids might be beneficial.
While there are no surefire home remedies to completely eliminate keloids from piercings, a few methods may help reduce their appearance:
1. Apple Cider Vinegar: It can help reduce redness and appearance. Apply it directly to the scar, let it air dry, and rinse with warm water after 5 to 10 minutes.
2. Aspirin: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, aspirin can help shrink and improve the appearance of keloids. Crush three tablets, mix with water to form a paste, apply on the keloid, let it dry, and then gently rinse off.
3. Lemon Juice: Rich in vitamin C, lemon juice can be a natural way to lighten and treat keloids. Apply fresh lemon juice on the keloid, massage it in, and rinse with warm water after about 30 minutes.
4. Garlic: Garlic might speed up healing by improving circulation and hindering enzymes needed for keloid formation. Apply crushed garlic on the keloid, leave for 15 minutes, and wash off with lukewarm water.
And for more advanced treatments:
1. Silicone Sheets or Gel: Over time, silicone can reduce keloids by improving skin hydration, leading to softer scars.
2. Laser Therapy: This newer treatment can help flatten keloids and fade their color.
3. Steroid Injections: Effective in reducing the size and appearance of keloids, these injections work by minimizing collagen production. Between 50% and 80% of treated keloids shrink.
4. Cryotherapy: This method involves freezing the keloid tissue and can reduce its size by up to 50%.
While keloids aren’t harmful to your health, they can be emotionally distressing. Home remedies might help reduce their size and make them less noticeable. If they persist, it’s a good idea to consult a doctor for other treatment options.
